Mick Reeves 1/4.5 Hurricane

Postby Wayne Butler » August 1st, 2022, 9:04 pm

Ive started a build thread on the RCSB forum too but value the view of people I knw in this forum so here goes.

Bought a part started MIck Reeves 1/4.5 Hurricane from a guy over 2 yrs ago now and because of covid and the fact that we had lost our flying site I was on the verge of selling the whole lot...thankfully we have managed to find another flying site so I can start building again.

There was a lot of the initial contruction done when I got the Hurricane and it even came with a ZDZ80 engine which wasnt new but doesnt look like its had a lot of running.

First question to all in here is I dont think I can keep all the ZDZ hidden in the cowl... does anyone have any Ideas or is it too much power and should I trade in for a smaller engine...?

Second question has anyone ever made a canopy for this model.

Third question is that I will need a set of retracts and Oleos. I cant get a reply from Mick or Jim anyone got any alternatives?

I intend to detail the gun ports on each wing between the two main wing Spars with additional strengthening where required.

Ive had issues already though trying to align the canopy rails with the Bulkheads but others have done it so still working through that one.

I doubt any engine big enough to fly it won’t poke out unless you extend the prop driver and then push the engine back.
MR does a canopy for this model, their website is fairly good.
Looks good so far.

I would agree that a smaller engine would be inadequate , always better to have a reserve of power than not enough.
It will sound better , fly better and the odd bit of engine /silencer sticking will not be noticeable in flight, but what will be apparent will be the more realistic flight that the larger engine would confer to the model.
Good luck with the model , regards Ian Turney-White

... and, the ZDZ 80s a cracking engine. One's done sterling service for me in an Extra.

I agree with Stewart, if you can push the motor back and use the smallest prop extension you should be able to hide some of the cylinder protruding.
ZDZ has loads of power so amply pull that aircraft around the sky!

So back on with teh Hurricane build now.

Started to adapt the Seat I made which was a Spitfire Seat to a Hurricane one ... Main differences are how its secured to the Fuz.

This is the original seat I started.

and this is the same seat for the Hurricane. Same principle and it still moves as per original to adjustthe pilots seat height.

I have also sorted the Canopy rails..so now on with the rest of the cockpit and detailing.

Added some Weathering to the seat now. If you follow the original urgonimics then it will actually work, in that you can adjust the height of the seat.

I have also gathered enough ref to be able to make a pretty good representation of the lower control column workings helping to fill out the cockpit.

Well Maybe not quite to that Level dont have the resources, time or money...

Steady progress being made on the control column though... the top section now moves as per real grip with the aid of the scale chain and gears.

Contacted Jim at MR Models and as usual an excellent service.
He confirmed I had the earlier Front Spar so said he would cut me a new Spar and relevant Ribs that had changed because of the latest Elect retracts...

Cut the old Spar out and any Ribs that had changed.
Added new Spar and transferred the retracts onto the new Spar. Just need to align the retract Blocks with the travel of the oleos to make sure they don't get snagged and will then glue them in place.
