Guy Martin Doc': 'Last Flight of the Vulcan'

Postby Keith Mitchell » November 30th, 2015, 12:09 pm

I'm sure many members will have seen Guy Martin's hugely entertaining Ch4 programme last night. Well worth 'catch up' to view, particularly as our new President features in it.

However, many might have missed the fact that not only did our current President feature but a past President and a current Vice-President.

See if you can spot 'em (Clue to follow for those who can't........).

Dave et al - at around 18/19 mins run time on the video, the sale of '558 is announced by the RAF's disposal panel - speaker, VP Dave Hurrell.....!

Immediately following that we see a very high ranking RAF Officer handing over the aircraft log's etc.. Look closely; it's (Sir) John Willis.......

Now I can recall John telling me about the handover as it occurred at the time I was Chairman. Speaking to Dave H. this morning, we thought it to be around '97/'98.

In the following scene, Robert Pleming confirms it as '97. Intriguing, eh....

OK Keith--well I guessed the 2 names correctly---but I have fast run thro the recording I have and no handover on there--cant understand that---but the Handover I remembered very well---I was at Bruntingthorpe with the late Mike Jackson when the Vulcan landed there piloted by SQ Ldr DAVE THOMAS who I have met several times since---Sir John arrived in a RAF black car and handed over the log book to Dave Walton who had bought the Vulcan---but that was in 1993-----it was on our way back from that day when we decided to Build my first model Vulcan- !!!!!

I have noticed that although my recorder was set ok it only recorded 60 mins whereas the actual programme was 90 mins so I am missing the same bit as Dave. I will record it again at midnight on 47

Such a shame that great and all round lovely man John Willis couldn't have been around for XH558's short lived flying debut.
