Polystyrene Pig (Byron Christen Eagle)

Postby paul cartwright » April 26th, 2011, 7:25 pm

I have recently started building a byron 30% christen eagle and would love to hear from anyone who has had any experiance of these so called kits, The quality of fit on this kit is very poor and im still struggling to get to terms with the concept of a model that is made of posh polystyrene (byrofoam) that is designed for a quadra petrol engine, As the kit was made in the 1980's some of the products that are required to complete the model are no longer available so im having to try and source alternatives, So far i have almost done the top and bottom wings, the fus is joined and the undercarriage mounts are done and reinforced as the rear mounts just pulled through when i tightned the bolts up (oh the joys), I AM DETERMINED TO SEE THIS BUILD THROUGH AS SO FAR ITS BEEN A CHALENGE AND I WILL NOT GIVE IN.
ps anyone know of a good fuel proofer that is safe to use on foam?.........

I remember building one of these models way back - Byron Models were cutting edge stuff back then. they are a pain to build but you will be rewarded with a good flying model. Use wing skinning epoxy as a fuel proofer - liberally coat the inside of the tank bay as fuel spillage takes no prisoners. I think they were originally intended for glo power units such as the tigre 3000 etc. although they do list the 42 as an option. just a little tip, unless you've already done so - sand out the routed spar slots so that the spars can be capped with soft balsa . . its the devil to sand the spruce spars flush with that foam finish . . and also, paint the spars with some white emulsion to hide them when covered in oracover or profilm. good luck . . . I've seen a couple of them fly over here with Sachs 3.2...plenty of power. I've also seen one of them dissolve fairly quickly when it developed a gas leak....kind of funny to watch it fold it's wings and settle into a sticky mess. I believe the owner managed to save the tail feathers and the two upper wings.
