Boeing B50- The largest electric Model ever!

Postby Tony Nijhuis 2280 » February 8th, 2009, 10:08 pm

Guys,

Thought it time to post a new thread.....

This model has been 4-years in the making although I would say more off than on...but in the last four months I've been making a real effort to crack this one and get her ready for this year's LMA season. As you can see from the pictures she not finshed (colour wise) but all rigged up and ready for the final inspection.

The B-50 is a variant of the B-29 Super fortress and was one of the last great piston engined bombers of the 20th Centry extending operations well into the 1970s

The model has a span approaching 19' and the AUW is 75lbs so far.
Each electric motor gererated 3kW of power so 12kW in total will be availiable from a payload of up to 144 nimh cells (Yes a model of this size still suits the Nimh)

All the retracts, oleo legs and wheels, are bespoke (thanks to Keith Unwin of the Hastings Club)

As with my 12' Lancaster, the B-50 will have an on-board engine sound syste. Thomas Benedini has mixed a 4-engined Pratt & Whittney true sound and it sounds superb....The sound will be amplifier by two 200watt power amplifier driving six 50-watt so some serious but true scale noise will be heard.

Not sure if this is the largest electric model but scanning the internet I cant find another larger (or person silly enough to do this)

Happy days

Tony :D

Thanks Sverrir, interesting link......looks like he has someway to go yet

Hi John, yes I know Colin Straus has a B-36 on the go...where do you think the orginal concept plans came from ;) :D
It was his idea I should build the B-50......Would be fantastic to have a 'B' Bombers flying slot at one of the shows next year......B-17, B-25, B29, B36 & B50

Looks as if the B-50 might be first into the air, but it won't be long before it will be overshadowed by these other two...obviously they are just as silly as I am ;) .....

Happy Days

Yep Alan, would only need the B-36 ready and job done.

With all the ran we have been having, Hastings flying field is currently under water so it doesn't look promising for any test flying this month :|

Never mind

Happy Days :D

Apart from the fact the B-25 was built by North American

....and just to disrupt it further, I hope to be able to add my 'Martin' B-26 to the formation by the end of the year

Hi Tony, I have just got my hands on some 100mm stroke linear actuators very powerfull on 6v and direct hook-up no belcranks and linkages to worry about. Just the job to simplify those large flaps.
I will bring them to Wigan
Hugh Grant LMA 3000 from sunny Aberdeen.

Hi Hugh, How much & many do you have??? I have a 75% complete Super Conny and they sound just perfect for the flaps... May need about 4 or so.

Unfortunately I won't be at Wigan but let me know details anyway

Just for info, the Conny is around the 20' span mark, and has four 5-Cylinder 4-stroke radials waiting to go in.... All the building work is done and hardware bought....Just need to find time from somewhere....... Next year I hope

Happy Days :D
