1/4 Scale F4u 5-n Corsair

Postby graham buchanan » March 11th, 2009, 1:25 pm

Hi all,

Here is a quick update on my XXL Corsair, which will be ready for this season and after all inspections.
I have been building this Corsair for the last few years, in-between building for other people so it has taken a while coming round.
The XXL has a span of 3.1 meter and will be powered with the Moki Radial from Stuart McKay.http://www.moki.co.uk/mackay.htm
The Corsair is a very strong composite design and goes together very well, but as a few of you may know I have remodelled the XXL into a mark 5N Corsair Flown by Guy Bordelon {Annie Mo} this has taken a while to do with all the alterations, with extending the cowl, altering and remoulding canopies, and rather big ray-dome the list goes on.

I have just got the final weathering to do, and radio installation ,then the inspections from Mr Bones.

All the art work, stencils and Paint masks are from Nigel Wagstaff at Flightline Graphics, Nigel has spent a lot of time on the research of Annie Mo and has came up with most exact set of Markings I have ever used.
Here is Nigel's web page if you are after some new markings for your latest project. http://www.flightlinegraphics.co.uk/index.htm

Here are few pics so far.

Hi Trevor,
Thanks for the compliments on the Corsair, she is taking shape.
Regarding the Pilots, I make them to order and I will be making them full time as I have had good response on them.
Here is a pic of the one I did For Ali's Fw 190.
The Pilots are 1/4 scale 18" tall.

Superb Graham, awesome machine and a true 1/4 scaler made by your own hands.
Excellent weathering as well, no point in having a hanger Queen.
Could you let me have a price for a pilot in WW2 RAF head gear please.
I would be grateful if you could email me at studio.mike@btinternet.com.
Cheers. Mike.

Strange how the forum swear police wont allow a word on the above.
It was merely the same word to discribe the opposite to KIng, or would prefix Elizabeth the second.
If you go to Kens to test fly I would like to be there myself !! M

Queen , I didnt say it was a swear word , the softwear will be programmed to auto delete several popular words.
Ive typed it in as the first word on the line above .

Anyway back to the point lest we getaway from it.
Ace Corsair. really looking forward to seeing this one.

Mike is correct, when I built the forum I took the opportunity to evoke the word censor for thirteen words. Not because that most LMA and guests will use them, but it reduces the load on the three administratores having to pollice the forum for accidental spelling mistakes and someone getting carried away.

If you enter one of the thirteen words it is replaced by ****.

Hope that clears up any misunderstanding.

Robin

Hi Mike thanks for compliments on the Corsair,I should have her ready hopefully by the end of the month, then I will get her out for some taxi engine trials.
Regarding pilots I will have a look into a brit pilot for you ,it's making up all the small parts that take the time.

Hi Dave hope your well,
Sorry for no response, been over in France working for a friend,Back now and working on the model building game full time.

Some more pics of the Corsa, I'm just adding all the dirty bits which is fun,I use a dirty wash which is from the Deluxe range of test pots!!!!. ;)

Sorry no pics of the wash application on the Corsair, but here are a few pics of the same method I used for my P38.
Very easy to use,but just do small areas at a time, brush it on working into all the small recesses then wipe of with a damp cloth, you can achieve some good results as you drag the cloth over all the rivets and get some oil streaking.

Here are some shots of the rad's on the 38.

Graham, ive a mind to think you may have pure art and commercial model making behind you as a profession like myself.
You have got all the confidence and technique needed with the weathering.
With regard to pilots maybe you could sell me a young head and hands at 1/4 scale if you have them and i will make up the rest.
In my book of scale model making, a totally convincing figure is the icing on the cake for a decent warbird.

Regards Mike.

Hi Mike,
Once again thank you very much for you very kind comments,Yes I have been building planes for most of my life,Professionally and Pleasure,I do strive to do the best I can, sometimes I can be my own worst enemy when it comes to finishing,as I just have to get it right, and this takes so long with all the different layers that build up to a finished model.
Mike I would be more than happy to supply you with a pilot,I'm just in the process of getting moulding gear for the pilots and the first batch will be 10 German pilots.
I will send you a mail, regarding the RAF pilot.

Back to the Corsa, Nigel once again has came up trumps with his Paint Masks, Nigel has just supplied me with all the small numerical for the corsair, these are so much better than the water slides as you can weather them of with out them splitting.
She is starting to come together now and wont be long till the big day!!!!!

Here are some pics of the stencils from Nigel http://www.flightlinegraphics.co.uk/

Here are some shots of the outer wing panel, the first pic has some freshly applied stencils, the second pic shows the stencil weathered out with a bit of wet & dry then I went back over with dirt mix.

Graham , dont worry about thanking me again, but after seeing the latest photos up, i have to comment again and say , EPIC, its one of the most convincing paint jobs i have ever seen.
People dont realise just how much distress and tonal changes in paint occur on active warbirds, particularly on an aircraft of this generation.

As I have already mentioned if you go to Kens for test flying, I would love to be there to see it in the flesh "no pressure", I could bring the Spit as well to blow the workshop dust off, with a few circuits in formation with Bonesy.

Hi Mike,
Sorry it's been a while, been locked away in the workshop!!!
Mike if you send me your address I will send on the parts for your pilot.

The corsair is not far off now just choosing the 2.4 setup, which is best and what is needed, maybe you all can help,do I Need twin receivers and if so do I need a powerbox for splitting???
Ali has been a great help as always, so cheers Ali, I will be placing that order soon.

We all went out for our first big Warbid Meet of the season at RAF Scampton, what a great weekend apart from my mishap with the 109 :( , this has now swayed me to go over to 2.4.

Some Pics of "Annie Mo" @ Scampton.

Cheers Graham B.
