DA 85cc

Does anybody operate a DA 85c single (Desert Aircraft, that is ......). I know DA are powerful engines, but are the singles as good as their twins for starting?

DA's are probably the easiest singles to start, 2-3- flicks on choke till it fires. Then 3-4 off choke and away she will go.The twins I use 150's are the same. 3w singles are similar but a bit more priming. And we all know Zenoha. Unless you have the flick of superman it aint going to go.

i had a DA 85 on a 33% ultimate. It was the easyest starting engine i have ever had. so easy i could stand over tail and give a gentle flick from behind and it would pop in to life. As rob said mine was 2-3 flicks every time. powerfull and quiet on a zimmerman canister. 27/10 prop i found best.

Thanks, Chaps, your comments and discussions with Steve Holland are all in agreement ...... As I'm needing four of these in a project, ease of starting is crucial - the old right arm ain't what it used to be ......!

If you need 4 of them you may be interested in the new DLE 85. This is basically half of the DLE 170 in exactly the same way that DA produced their 85. I have had very good service out of my DLE motors and the guys in my club who fly the 40% aerobatic models are all very happy with their DLE motors. Ease of starting is something we all enjoy and the DLE motors are amongst the best.
Price difference between the DA and DLE is significant and worth consideration.

Hi Keith,
As Allan said easy to start, 3 flicks choke on 3 off away to go, i have his that is going in my new Vailly Tempest which should be ready later this year :) 4 ??? Interesting :)

You're right, Andy; 21' W/span.

Question to fellow 'LMA-ers': Am I right in speculating this could be the biggest W/span of any model built in the UK ....??

....and for JohnG. Yes, re' DLE's (there's several in our club) they appear to be very powerful, beautifully-machined and good value for money. But what about longevity? I must confess to a worry I have about 'Chingy- Chango' metallurgy and the quality of their alloys.......

I can only give my experience but the DLE's we have in our glider tugs probably do more work in a single weekend than most model motors do in a year or more and we run them hard. Flat out on the climb so loaded up and slow airspeed and then chop the throttle at the top (and cut off the lubrication !!) and dive at the floor with the prop trying to drive the motor. We do that 50 to 100 times a weekend consuming 2 or 3+ gallons of fuel. They are still runing as sweet as can be and start easily.
Personally I would be more than happy to fit them into the Constellation if it was mine.

21' will get you nowhere near the biggest in the wingspan race. You forget all the big gliders in the LMA. Biggest I am aware of is 10.4m and can also claim to be a powered model as it has an electric self launch system fitted.
