Klemm 25 1/2 scale

Postby John Greenfield » November 12th, 2013, 9:50 pm

After a very busy flying season I have finally got back to my new project, a Klemm 25 to 1/2 scale. I posted pictures earlier in the year of the built up wing spars but the last month has seen lots of hours spent building all the main built up ribs. Construction is following the full size exactly using the same materials and of a scale section. With all the main ribs for the outer panels made progress has just started on all the half ribs. One more month of rib building should have them all made and assembly of the wings can start.

My god that is intricate work, can I ask the silly question of what the process is behind them building them?

James

The ribs are being built like this as this is exactly how the full size ribs are formed. I like to build my models copying the full size construction and using the same materials of the correct scale thickness and section where possible.

Each rib was built in its own jig, not shown, with the top 5mm sq member being steamed to shape. All the gusset plates to go over the joints are still to be added and each one of them will be hand cut to the correct shape, they are all different !!

Ultimately this will all be covered up as most of the Klemm wing is ply sheeted so I guess I could have made them from simple sheet but that is not the point. I like to build “Replica’s” of the full size and not just simple models.

Regards

John

I love that kind of attention to detail, no one will know what the inside of the wing looks like but the builder will and thats the point haha!

Happy new year to you all.

My Klemm project is making good progress. Below are some pictures of the wings ready to have the front "D" box ribs added.

Would you expect any "play" in the wings, as in bending movement while in flight? I'm sure the full size aircraft has a certain amount of movement in it.

I have been a bit slow ? in posting any more on the Klemm build but it is all finished now and has made its first few flights. The Valach 420cc radial has really made the model. I hope the link below will work and you can hear the motor running.
