New workshop

Got the boarding done so its plaster o'clock tomorrow hopefully. Its nice to finally see the last of the untidy 'farmerstyle' brickwork in the this room, its all sound enough but probably not how I'd have done it

After a pretty hectic week of evenings plastering, I should have it all done tomorrow night Just got the big plain wall to do plus the sides of the door reveal, get ready for some pretty exciting and fabulously focussed pics, but I canny be ar5ed doing them again!! Also picked up the glass and the lights and fittings etc, so fingers crossed should have a fairly useable workshop by the end of the weekend

WooHoo, plastering done, hopefully it'll all stay on!

Plan is tomorrow to get the lights up, switched and working, plus all sockets in and useable, and the glass in and puttied.

Got the workshop end wired up. The garage bit next then it can be connected to the distribution board. Hoped to get this all done this weekend, well today actually but we had some work to do on the first fix wiring and some other stuff in Jane's den, ready for the building inspector late next week.

Also got the glass in, but ran out of chuffing putty so couldn't finish two of them

Should be nice and light in here me thinks. I have kept a plan of where the roof and wall timbers are should I need to fasten owt to them, thats also the reason for the suspended lighting since the plan is to store flat wing panels and stuff on the ceiling and they'll block the light if they are surface mounted. The plaster is drying out nicely as the doors have been open all day which helps a bunch.

Scale Day tomorrow but should get some more done tomorrow night,

Plastering all dry, sizing coat then top coats, cleaned up the steel joist and painted it too since I knew I wouldn't do it after I'd moved in! The storage above the lights works well and it's time to move the furniture in. This is taking ages and the space is shrinking rapidly. Should be all in and tided away this week. Also, I'm hoping to make a start on the sliding doors next door tail end of this week.

As it was such a nice day I spent it accompanied by a disc cutter and a breaker and proceeded to cover everything in brick and block dust cutting the hole for the new doors, since the doors are 20" wider than what was there. After some investigation of the timber lintle above the door it was discovered that I could cut both sides and retain the original lintle since it would still be sitting on 6" of brickwork. Although convenient, it wouldn't suit the use since I'd still be squeezing the bigger models past the car. So it was decided to take the whole lot out of one side which meant putting a new 9" x 3" timber over the gap. This timber is positioned so the door runners fasten to the back of it. Here some pics of the doors in place though the 'round the corner' bit of track isn't there yet since there's nowt to fasten it to yet. Completely transformed the building now the up and overs have gone from both sides

Man, what a mission getting that there track in so that them there doors open smoothly, been at it all day and I've only done the top track. But still, they do now run smoothly. The problems arose as the floor slopes downhill to the door, so the doors have to uphill as they open, its not much, not enough for them to crash closed but the are easier to close than open. Had to remake the wooden corner bracket since our install isn't direct onto the side wall as previous. I was initially going to make some brackets and hang the whole lot from the roof timbers (or just one as it would have happened) but decided on a 3x2 framework which I'll rack up with shelves so the car stuff takes up less floor space. Now I know what is going on in the corner I can tidy up all the wiring and light switches, I'll box in the leccy meter and have the compressor in the corner underneath, I might build a solid bench and vice in there too since it was a little scary replacing the front suspension spring on my car last week, doing it freestyle with 6 hands, 2 spring compressors and a wobbly spring / strut assembly!!

HI IAN Like your period property and thats some shed !! Spotted this abit late,A cheap and
effective insultion for old bick walls & cielings is 1/2" plasterbd inc. 25mm poly
insulation attached, this is glued straight on { dot & dab method ] and fast .Your system
beat this from a fire/smoke aspect.Just goes too show what a dummy builder can do .tried too put a smillie on?? regards bonnie

Spent sometime over this Humbug Festival making and fitting the bottom track for the doors to run in. Made from 25 x 5 steel angle and screwed to the floor every 8" or so. Took some trail fitting to get it somewhere near as the doors go uphill a bit as they enter the garage, so the front rail is set back very slightly to allow the lot around the corner smoothly. Once fitted, I could then cut the side reveals for the frames so that once slid shut, the final door can be unpegged from the rail and closed conventionally, making a very secure, surprisingly draught free set up with no rattling. These reveals were a bit of a messy job with a 12" disc cutter, it was wet and windy so the dust wasn't THAT bad. The access door can be opened just like a normal door, and bolted back against the next, or bolted into the bottom rail using the 'two drop' period bolt. I'm so pleased these doors were found as they have really made the den suit the car and most of the toys within. Shelving and compressor cupboard next, tomorrow hopefully.

Really looking forward to getting some use out of this den next year!!

End of an era for me, finally cleared everything from my old temporary permanent workshop of over ten years, twas a tad emotional closing the door for last time. Someone said they'd miss the infamous driveway model photos on the intyweb, I won't!!

It's amazing how things go downhill and derelict looking when they aint used, its not been used daily for over 12 months, not at all for 4 months.

Anyone want any benches?
