PMs on here!!!

Postby Mike Ellis » January 16th, 2017, 12:23 am

Once again I have had a member inform me that he has sent me a PM and guess what !! NOTHING'S ARRIVED !!!

I have tried to message the member back and guess what !!! NOTHING'S GOT SENT !!!

Why don't people use members e-mail service !!! Surely we are not all paranoid that we MAY get an unwanted e-mail from someone else for whatever reason !!!
Either this system works or it doesn't, and as far as I can see its a complete waste of space!!!

Any more comments about this useless addition to a great site is welcome !!! You never know, the powers that be MAY get rid of it !!!

Mike, I really can't understand why your PM's don't work, I have never had an issue with it. I know we have had this conversation before. Maybe there are more with your problem I don't know! but if there are, no one has told us. So you see from where I stand It is hard to fix what isn't broken.

Hmm, if a PM does not arrive, how would you know unless you are informed that you will receive one? On the other hand, I find email increasingly erratic as stuff randomly it seems, goes in to spam folders. I have had emails bounce back to me as rejected, try another email program and guess what? They work. The most reliable is either text message or Facebook PM or Whatsapp.

Hi Dave
Yes we have spoke before about this and this system isn't just broke , it was never up an working in the first place ( read Bob Thompsons reply !!)
From now on I will put my email addy and phone number on any post I make and say NEVER send me a Pzm as they never arrive !!
We are in the 21st century for goodness sake ! I send and receive emails everyday so what's so different about folk using them on here or just replying to a post on here , as that way, provided they do not send it to the right email addy then it gets bounced back BUT not with these PMs , you never know if they have been received if you do manage to send one, which in itself is quite a feat !
Anyway Dave ,may I wish you a happy new year and keep up your hard work.

Kind Regards

Mike Ellis LMA. 652

Mike, I understand your frustration, I will continue to look into it, I am sure there is a reason you can't use the PM system. The reason people don't use emails or give emails address out is that there are "bad" bots out there that harvest your email address and telephone numbers for spammers. If you want to know more just google it.

I would suggest you set up another email address just for contact purposes so if you get spammed it won't matter as much.

Happy New Year to you too.

Hi Dave,
I have just spoken with Pete Siggins by phone !( oh so much easier ) And he tells me he has the same problem with PMs as I do lol
Perhaps if you could tell people on here in a step by step process,as how to do it , as we then may all be enlightened as to HOW it's actually done lol, as sure as eggs is eggs we don't know at present, and It's a riddle wrapped up in an enigma!
Surely we are not all thickos and plebs on here !!

Mike,

It looks like you read the test message I sent you, so that bit appears to be working.

I know a public rant makes you feel better, but if you ask those of us who work here for help, we will give it.

A kind of guide on how PM's work on PHPbb (the software that drives the forum) is here...

Just a point on email addresses- when you post them, change the @ to 'at'. That way the bots dont harvest your email. The old forum suffered badly from that, after posting my old email on there some years ago, I was inundated with spam for months.

Mike, sounds like you need to tick a box, click on your name, click edit profile, go too board preferences, click on global settings, all the ones on the left should be ticked in the left box, last one in the right box, while your there, have a look around other drop downs, but dont get giddy!

Thanks Alan!
You have already lost me lol.......
I prefer to click "new email". Write my message then click "Send". Far simpler and I know it will get through !

Your not trying, click on your name, thats a start, right at the side will be edit profile in brackets, then follow the instructions i have given you, suggest you open this page twice, so you can refer back, come on, no sense blaming the site if you havnt got it set up properly! Lol

Alan
I,ve done as you suggested and it was all already ticked as you suggested so it would appear to be set up as required.
Fingers crossed it MIGHT work but I honestly have little faith in it as , why does it cause so many problems for loads of people on here? Personally I have NEVER managed to send a PM on here as yet!

Mike,

Yes your settings allow you to send and receive P'M's.

Don't forget that the message needs to go in the message box, not in the address box or it won't work. That's the not 100% obvious bit, and will stop the message from being sent as the machine won't know who to send it to.
