Maxford USA Albertros D.Va 120 fs IC help...

Postby brucepeter2007 » March 21st, 2018, 11:03 pm

Wonder if anyone can help me with a few pictures of their own IC installation in this plane. It’s always been my favourite model biplane but the kits instructions seem biased towards electric power however a four stroke will [b]sound[b] right.
Any help before I start to tackle the kit would be most welcome. Regards Peter

Seems it’s not been done as no reply from over the pond or over here so I’m going it alone and already posted 3 videos on the RCM&E site with the forth underway. Been hard but working out well.
Only thing I would like to get hold of now is a 138mm did Albertros style spinner. The one included in the kit is not really fit for purpose because it’s not balanced- it’s really for electric as it’s a ply base and a plastic vac formed dome which would crack up on the first nose over. Anyone know where I can get a dome!

I should use it as a mould.

Hi Bob. Thanks for getting back regarding the spinner. I am looking at doing that now and found some info from across the pond to do it in fibreglass. I have had no experience with fibreglass but I don’t have much choice as the existing spinner looks good but would not survive a nose over...

There are better people on here than me to advise, but I would use it to make a female mould and use 6 gram cloth and epoxy and reinforce with carbon. Two to three layers and try to keep it balanced.

Thanks for the advice on the spinner - looking at metal spinners who can do the job and it would be balanced as well. Found this by looking on YouTube and found it an overlooked subject for our model plane spinners.
Will be looking into the costs in the next two weeks as I won’t have the time till then to go along and see the company and show them what’s required.
The Maxford USA Albatros now has its ASP120 fs fitted and there is not a lot of the inverted engine sticking out. Made four videos showing how it was done if anyone else would like to convert the kit from electric to glo -
Regards for all your comments. Peter

The four videos for the electric to glo conversion is shown below - they are all on a number of forum sites both here in the U.K. and two over the pond and should be easy to find but first is here if anyone is interested.

Thinking outside the box, would the front part of this work? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dexam-Aluminiu ... G9461HFY02 Bit of lathe work, make a backplate?

Hi Alan. Always a wealth of information and many thanks for the link and I have ordered it. Got to be better than starting from scratch and I would only need to get a bead turned on the edge to engage into the backplate once made up. I am hoping the lid will be thick enough to do the job but for £10 with p+p. Got to be worth a try.

Just an update - ordered the wok from Amazon but it’s quite flat on the centre so does anyone want a wok lid?
Looking at metal spinning now as if you can do it with the real thing should be able to do it for a model. Going to buy an oak block to turn up a former and proceed fron there - fingers crossed.
Ref the Maxford USA Albatros the installation is going well now the engine is in but it’s been plagued with problems being now solely designed for electric. Been a good challenge so far and just hope I can make it past all the hurdles.
The four videos I made of the ASP120 fs IC installation have proved popular over the pond but as it’s an American kit no surprise there.
