LMA Sky 120 Build

Okay I am back again the build is going slow at the moment, so not much done, the good news is I finish on Friday for Christmas ‘well its good news for me anyway’ so I might get some more time in the shed, I would have done more this weekend if a cretin Mr Johnson hadn’t drag me out in the cold to try and video the Sky 120 for the website, I told him it was a new camera and I hadn’t had chance to get use to it, to which he replied ‘how hard can it be’ now where have I heard that before, anyway we did it and its Cr*p but I uploaded it on youtube anyway so have a look if you want it is on the front page of the web site. Right back to the build, I finely got some 9mm spruce strips so I could finish the box section in the wing

Once that was done I got myself some old garden wire ‘well it was new garden wire really’ I nick it from the one who must be obeyed, to use for pulling the servo leads though, wrapped one end around a piece of scrap wood and put it though the ribs where the servo wire will go.

Now it’s time to skin the bottom half of the wing following the same procedure as before only this time there is a bit of cutting out to do around the servo tray and a hole to cut out for the servo wire.

Now just before I finish skinning this side I decided to glue in the dowel wing locaters on this wing.

And that’s it for now again all I need to do now is sand it in to shape and add the ailerons later, I will now get on with doing the second wing making sure I build it the opposite way, 'you may laugh' but I have seen someone build the same wing twice and what made it worse is, we all help him as well, it happen, so once again lesson learnt.

hi dave,

the sky120 look as though it flys really well from the video. am i right in thinking that the model in the video is powered by a 38?? if so how do you think it would fly on a 26?? it looks quite spritely so i'm guessing it would be more like a trainer with a 26.

Hi Nick,
Yes it is a Z38 in the one on the video, and it can shift, Tony says you can use a 26cc in it so I think as you say it will act like a real trainer if that is what you are looking for.
I am debating whether to put flaps on mine because the glide on the model is fantastic and I see Dave having to side slip it in sometimes just to slow it down, but it does fly well, well worth the investment if you are planning on getting one.
If you are a builder then it will be a non event for you, if you are a beginner like me well you have seen the thread up to now it is not hard at all.

Well, being off work this week has give me chance to do the second wing, here they are done and ready for some trimming and sanding but I will wait for the weather to change first don’t fancy standing in the snow sanding them down. Its Christmas Eve now and hopefully I will get chance to get back in the shed sometime today and start the fuz, fingers crossed.

Okay here we go again, now I have finely got rid of her indoors, she has gone off shopping, hopefully won’t see her until tonight fingers crossed.
Now I don’t know about you but I am glad Christmas is only once a year having the in-laws for a few days has left me mentally drained, it was like having 2 kids again, I am going away next year.

Right here we go, it’s 9:00 am and I have just waved the wife off for the day ‘yippee’ now I’ll make myself a cup of tea, why the heaters warm the shed up ready for the day, I was just about to go to the shed when I heard the letter box go, so I went to see what the postie had left me and low and behold my Journal had arrived, well this deserved another cuppa and so time went on ‘am I boring you all yet’ ‘sorry’ okay I will put the journal down and get on with it.

To the shed we go, now because of the time laps I am now cooking it is that hot in there, first of all I cut all the parts out for the fuz ready for assembling.

Now I remember Tony said just follow the part numbers and don’t be tempted to skip some of them, so let’s start with F1 & F2, ‘oh you know how it goes’ using the same method as before with white glue and cyno it soon starts coming together, F3,4,5, & 6 I used epoxy F7and 8 was the other side of the fuz and glued the same as F1 & 2

Now that the basics are sorted it is now time to strengthen it all up for this I am using epoxy again am not going though all the numbers again you how it go, pictures say it all.

this whole build looks very simple or is it just me?? are you using 5 or 30min epoxy? could it be sustituted for aliphatic?? i would epoxy on the firewall but prefer to use aliphatic where i can.

Rob, you are right you never have enough clamps

Nick, the build is that simple, I have never built from a kit before this is why I did the build thread to show how easy it is, as for you glues I don't know enough to help you on that one but I am sure someone on here will, I am using 5 and 30 min expoxy as well as wood glue and thin cyno.

Hello again well day two of getting back in the shed, her indoors as gone to the in-laws for the day thank god she didn’t ask me to go, just need it to snow hard now so she will have to say overnight ‘did I just say that out loud’ ‘Opps’ sorry didn’t mean that, right let’s get on before I get myself into trouble.

The first thing I did today is add a little extra strength to the firewall with some triangular hard wood beading I had left over from one of my many little jobs her indoors always seem to find me when I want to go flying, I am sure she sit there thinking them up.

After that I concentrated on strengthening the rear of the fuz I have to admit it is getting a bit boring saying the same things so I will shut up ( thank god I here you cry) and let the pictures do the talking.

That it for today, weather is looking bad again for tomorrow, so could be another day in the shed, her in doors will be on the big clean tomorrow, she has been chomping at the bit ever since the Christmas Dec’s went up, ‘they are funny creatures’ so, I am out of here ASAP.

Rob, the holes are pre drilled that all i can tell you, the plan refers to a 38.
