well i have started painting and here are a couple of shots of weathered detail, i will post again in a couple of weeks once all paint work is done. C

No Typoon squadron ever had the codes W I L.
Now where did that come from eh ?

It was a top secret Ace fighter squadron flown out from a top secret field in a place called Theydon Bois, a bit like the s.a.s top chappy's apparantly. so take that Chocks away Mike Booth

Ah yes how right you are I went away and did some further research.

The official papers and records were only made public last year, such was the secrecy that this small outfit operated under.
There were only six pilots allocated to the highly risky missions.
The nature of the tasks demanded top flying skills and the leading Officers in the outfit were a Wing Commander Kenneth
Baldock-Marrow and Squadron leader Christopher 'Willie' Wiles.

Several daring raids over Germany, with pinpoint accuracy with 60lb rockets, lead to several of the Squadron receiving DFCs . Including J. Harne and M.R. Barrington-Strummer
One particular event involved the rocketing of Locomotives pulling a huge consignment of balsawood for use in the construction of the Focke Wulf Moskito.
The trains had to be stopped at all costs without damaging the load.
This they acheived and production of the German twin ceased completely.
This raid was in the last months of the war and it was rumoured that the officers had squadron ground crew 'remove' two of the carriages rammed high with balsa logs and have it flown back to a secret location in Hertfordshire North of Stevenage.
No one knows why the material was so precious, but one of the surviving pilots Barry 'whizzer' Watson now in his late 80s, has said that the grandsons of Baldock-Marrow and Wiles are still working their way through the forest of timber hidden in a barn up there in Herts.

My God its a small world, I was in W H Smiths the other day flicking through Aeroplane Monthly and as i settled on a picture of Typhoon's in Normany, the chap next to me who was looking through Flypast Magazine, leant over and said my father used to fly those!
Oh yes i said 'what Squadron' the retired man in his late sixties said well it wasnt ever really official.
I pressed him further and he introduced himself as the son of a Flying Officer Rees who spent time with the 'Squadron' I have written about above, unbelievably he mentioned the CO's name Baldock - Marrow.
After a short further chat I established that the old boy is still around at the Grand age of 90!

I have made enquiries through the gentleman in WH Smith's as to wether it would be possible arrange an interview as although Baldock - Marrow 90, he is apperantly in excellent health and 'as sharp as a pin'.
If I get any further i will report back.

Sorry for the odd 'typo' such as Normandy in the above...it must be the cold...roll on Spring.
Anyway I have made contact with the Baldock-Marrow family home in Herts and it would appear that a meeting is on the cards.
The Senior Baldock-Marrow lives in an annex on the side of the main house on the family estate.

Not wanting to hijack this thread anymore than to say that the Hurricane (pictured earlier in this thread) had a successful test flight yesterday so its on with the detailing and finishing.

This pic is post test flight. The Typhoons should will be along soon to join it.

Well further investigations have now lead me to Baldock-Marrow so I have arranged an interview to take place in April.
A short conversation on the telephone confirmed that the old CO is still as sharp as a pin and he pointed out to me that the aircraft in the Squadron were maintained in a faultless condition and that they were immaculate 'as if new' in appearance unlike other fighters of the day that had the paint falling off them after a few sorties.

The waft will be going on next saturday, and thats not a cooling hatch, thats where i shall be keeping my sandwiches on those long flying sunny days :D
