First Large Model

Looking at building my first large model, ideas that I have is building a Greenley, think that what the plan is called and was available on LMA somewhere, not sure what price the plan was though, other option is building the Evans VP1 Volksplane, if I go for the Greenley what size engine would be suitable for a model of this size and is the wing foam or built up? If I go for the Evans VP1 Volksplane which I have already done some research on, what scale would be suitable for a first large model and engine size?

Look forward to any help and advice.

can i ask, what stage of flying are you at, what have you flown already?

Alan does ask a sensible question but if you decide to go down the Greenley route you will find lots of help on various model forums and many have been built.
The plans are available as a free download from www.ghostsquadron.co.uk and you will find drawings for all the various versions as well as foam and 1 or 2 piece built up wings. CNC cut parts are also available from various cutters including Cliff Evans. If you want to discuss the Greenley option further or want more info on where to get bits please feel free to call me any evening after 7.30pm on 01923 857009

I would suggest as a first large model a Standard Greenley with a Zenoah 38 would be ideal but do not forget the LMA's Sky 120 as another option. This is available as a full kit, I think from SLEC (but can someone confirm this )

Geoff---John is correct --the Sky 120 is available as a full kit from Slec.Both the models suggested will make an ideal first time large model trainer----if you are a member,why not come along to one of our fly-in days where you can sample either of these "hands on"---not sure what area you are from,but a week tomorrow we have a fly-in day up at Strathaven in Scotland where both types of model will be available----the following week we are at Southport for another LMA fly-in----you will see the full calendar of events on the front page of our website-------hope this helps---DAVE

Alan,

I have flown a variety of model aircraft both electric and power, gliders, aerobatic with 91 4 stroke engines, and of course a Raptor 60 helicopter, in the past have had SLEC Druine D31 Turbulent and the T240 both of which were great to fly, I have had a break from flying model aircraft as have spent a lot of time falling out of aircraft. and still do to this day, It's almost like starting again as currently in the process of moving house, good thing is builder has made an error on the kitchen top, so I now have 8ft long perfect building board, just need to glue some sundelea to it not sure if I have spelt this correctly.

Thank you for the Ghost Squadron web link and contact number, and sure will have some questions about building from your Greenley plan if I go for this option, will also look at the Sky 120 from SLEC and do some research on this, I'm not a member of the LMA at the moment, but will be shortly as there will be as there will great benefits in doing so. I'm in the south of the UK so Scotland is a little to far away, but will keep a close eye on LMA's events that remain this year.

Hi Geoff,
I have a Greenley and a Lowley both are shown on the plan and both fly really well. I have a friend who is learning to fly large models and he finds the Lowley easier to fly than the Greenley? Both models are quick to build and you can get the foam wings from Bills kits.

I have a few questions if I may.

1... Where is the best place to buy a Zenoha 62cc engine from, plus fuel tank?
2... What type and size of prop would you select for the Zenoha 62cc?
3... What type and size of servos would you select?
4... Need to buy a new transmitter, any suggestions here would help?
5... Where would you buy an U/C for the Greenley?
6... Would either 88" or 100" span Greenley be good or should I stick with the 88" version, is there much difference between the two?
7... Would you suggest to build the wing as one piece or build it as two?
8... Undecided yet to build the wing as built up or foam, any suggestions here from what people have built so far?

1) Fighteraces do the engine and he also dose the bits to go with it . If its your first 62 then I would suggest either get an easystart for it or a spring starter.They do have a habit of kicking back on starting so an easy start or spring would stop it . Phil also dose tanks I think ?? but Dubro tanks are as good as any and most model shops sell them. 32 oz would be fine unless your on glider towing duty all day and a bigger one would be useful.. Also you need a Felt clunk and Tygon Fuel tube to plumb it up
2) 22x10 is the standard 62 prop . Then you can fine tune it for your application at a later date My one on a tuned pipe when run in was happy on a carbon 24x10.
3) Hitec Hs 645mg would be my choice of servo. Run a pair of 5 cell Sub C packs with a switch on each pack fitted with Diodes on the output leads.
4) Any major brand of TX . I like Futaba ,thats my preference . The new 8ch Jobster would be perfect . There a plenty of 10 FG or 12Fg jobs second hand which are stunning TXs . If you use Fasst you can use the FRsky Rxs at under £25 pounds a go.
6-7-8 ) I had the 88" Greenly with a 62 and a tuned pipe .It was ace for glider towing and a one piece wing was fine for me. Just make sure you have the space for it. My one was built up but if I did it again it would be Foam as its a bit more ding proof.
Thats just what I would do and everyone has there own way of doing it .Its a great model and perfect as a first large model. Make sure you do the flaps and set them up as per plan. They are ace Dive to the ground with full flap and flair out at the last bit. It dose that party trick so well.
I intend to build the big one with a DLE111 in it on canisters with a 3 blade prop for a super quite tug set up in the near future.

Thank you for your reply, that's a great help, I'm sure that there are different ways of doing things.

Has anyone documented when building a Greenley, showing their of doing things by illustrating as a write up plus photos?

set the 62 up right, and no toys are needed, but they do help , a lot of us are going away from nimhs, even at sub c size, and going onto ABC life batteries, these are the battery of choice for our chairman, in his huge Vulcan, the 645s are a great choice, as for prop, i duobt you will be going towing yet!! drop the pitch, and get the diameter up, try a Menz 24x8, the 22x10 may just have a bit too much bite for you, use a heavy duty switch, i would use a standard slide switch, i was a futaba guy for ever, until i looked at the new (then) JR Dx9, its easy to programme, and looks and feels stunning, it uses every spectrum reciever going, lots dont like the next feature, but i love it, the recievers come with a satellite, which in efect is a 2nd reciever, they can be mounted anywhere, so far (looking for wood to touch) i have had no problems, good advice on the tank, but also you will need a petrol bung for the dubro, they come as standard with a glow bung, there are many outlets for the zenoah range, but Phil will sort you no probs,

one question, why the 62? bit of overkill for a greenly, ok for towing, but do you need such power? i still have a foam construction glens extra, its 88inch, and a lump, but it will go vertical from tale off, do you need such power? with the list that you have flown, it wont be long before your back in the saddle, welcome back, hope to see you at our cosford event,

Hi Geoff,
I've got some pictures of my Greenley if you want me to mail them to you? I fly my Greenley with a Zenoah 45 and it is fast with that engine. If you are going to use a 62 i would add flaps as i have trouble slowing mine down for landing sometimes. If you are just flying it for fun and not towing a Zenoah 38 will be fine thats what i used on my Greenley until i put the 45 on it. I use standard Futaba servos on my Greenley apart from the tail which has a Hi-Tec 645MG, had no problems with them.

Alan,

Just getting different feedback on what engine to put in the Greenley, depending on you intend to fly the model for, fun, towing etc, would you suggest a Zenoha 38cc or Zenoha 45cc engine? Just want to make sure that I'm making the correct choice of engine.

I'll dig out some photos and PM them to you. I went for foam wings for speed of build with my Greenley and Lowley (from Bills Kits) I do have the plans for the built-up wing with flaps which i will build one day when i'm not building 3 other models :shock: , as for the flaps i would build the Greenley with them incase you decide you want/need them later. Regarding the engine you can really put on it what you want from a Z38 to a Z62 or even a nice twin.
