P-40 Warhawk

Postby David Brown » December 4th, 2014, 9:23 am

Now the engine is sorted I started on the air-frame last night. The plans are enlarged Ziroli from 1/5 to 1/4 scale at 112" span. Retracts will be custom made with scale rotation using bevel gears and possibly hydraulically operated. All the parts cut dry fitted really well so no prob's so far. :)

Looks a fabulous project Dave, did you cut the kit yourself?

Thanks Dave, Steve all the wood will be hand cut with it being an enlarged & modified plan, I am slowly working through the parts and correcting the plan if needed.

Its moving along slowly. Only the stringer slots to clean up and then I can look at gluing it all together on the cradle I still have to make.

Dave

Nice work, will it be ready for the spring?

We'll have quite a collection of ww2 planes at Catton next year!

Hi karl, I will try my best but I have decided to build another plane at the same time. It is a 1/3.5 bf 109 Buchon, I have started the drawings and it will take the same power plant as the P-40 using the 4 blade prop I have test run. Meanwhile the P-40 is coming along, I have completed the clean up of the former's and tack glued it all together along with dry fitting of the strips to check the outer profile. A little bit to do hear moving a few slots and altering the profiles but not as bad as I thought it might be.

A bit more done on the fuselage, all of the framework is now glued up and the main stringers fitted, just the side frame doubler's to fit along with the hardwood fillets. Like Malcolm with his Beverly I have a couple of small issues that have shown up now that I did not see earlier that need to be addressed. The tail feathers are next, I plan to have removable tail planes to help with storage & transport along with servo mounting. She is looking quite big now with the cowl fitted.

Hi Dave, will you be kitting this? And making cowl/canopy moulds?

I will be making molds for the cowl, cockpit & undercarriage covers, its a long way off yet, I still have the retracts to build.
